A Buyer's Guide to LED Street Lights

    What Are LED Street Lights?

LED street lighting comprises light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and is commonly mounted atop poles to illuminate walkways, roadways, parking lots, and various outdoor areas, including shipyards. These essential infrastructure components enhance safety in their designated locations, and in some cases, they are referred to as LED road lighting fixtures based on their usage.

The adoption of LED street lights is swiftly supplanting the conventional street lighting systems that were familiar in our neighborhoods. This transition is primarily attributed to the numerous advantages offered by LED street lights. For instance, LED lights boast an exceptionally long lifespan as they lack fragile filaments that can quickly burn out. Moreover, LED street lights are eco-friendly, free from hazardous substances such as mercury. Additionally, they deliver energy savings of up to 70% and require minimal maintenance, making them ideal for areas where lamp replacement is impractical or costly.

LED Street Lights: What Types Are Available?

Today, the most common LED street lights are street lights, flood lights, and high mast lights.

Street Lights: Street lights are the most common type of LED street lights. They are tall lights usually placed on poles along the road. These lights enhance safety for drivers at intersections and on the road. They also help pedestrians stay safe, especially at crosswalks.

Flood Lights: Flood lights are powerful outdoor lights that brighten up large spaces. They are usually fixed in place and used a lot of electricity in the past. But with LED flood lights, they now use less power, making them popular for their energy efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and long lifespan. They come in various shapes for different purposes.

High Mast Lights: High mast lights are another common type of lights that illuminate large areas from high poles. They are used in places like ports, parking lots, and sports stadiums. These poles are typically 40 to 150 feet tall and can have four to sixteen light fixtures on them. They provide light for transportation, storage, safety, and pedestrian areas.

Replacing HID Lamps With LED Lights

For the longest time, our streets and other outdoor spaces have relied on high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps for illumination. The new LED lights are replacing HID lamps rapidly, as they have several shortcomings compared to HID lamps. For instance, LED lights are 60% more energy efficient than HIDs. LED lights are also low maintenance since they do not use gas (typically xenon) like HID lights.

The LED lights produce fewer emissions than HID lights, so they're more environmentally friendly. Another primary reason people choose LED lights over HID lights is the longer lifespan. The LED lights' high color rendering ability is another reason why people choose them over HID lights. LED lights are able to mimic natural light as closely as possible with the feature of color rendering ability. Pedestrians and drivers are better able to identify different objects at night by seeing colors more realistically, improving their safety and the safety of others.

How Should I Choose an LED Street Light?

Here are factors to keep in mind when buying an LED street light:

Wattage: LED lights use less power than traditional high-pressure sodium lamps for the same brightness. For example, a 100w high-pressure sodium lamp is equal to a 36W LED lamp, and a 60w LED lamp is like a 150w high-pressure sodium lamp. LED wattages range from 5w to 120w, with different applications based on pole height and the number of lanes.

LED Driver: LED drivers are crucial for converting AC to stable DC power in LED lights. Consider factors like output lumen compensation, timing dimming, thermistor, D4i, Dali, 0-10V, and auxiliary power supply when choosing an LED driver.Suncom has more than 300 employees and 50 national patents. Lens/Optics: LED street lights offer various light distribution options suitable for roadways, architectural, and area lighting. Some manufacturers offer customized options for specific lighting needs.

LED Chips: The quality, stability, and brightness of LED lights depend on the LED chips used. Common options include 3030 and 5050 chips, each with its own advantages.

Color Rendering Index (CRI): CRI measures how accurately a light source reproduces the colors of objects. While 100 is ideal, a CRI of around 70 is sufficient for LED street lights.

Correlated Color Temperature (CCT): CCT indicates the color appearance of the LED light, with measurements in kelvins. Examples include 5700K (cool), 4000K (neutral), and 2700K (warm). Consider the desired CCT for your lighting application.

    Installation of LED Lights

The installation process should always follow certain steps. Before embarking on the installation process, you should read the manufacturer's instructions. The following are some of the installation methods to consider.

The following steps will help you install LED street lights successfully.

    • The lamp body should be removed from the outer packaging after the outer packaging is opened.
    • The next step is to attach the tilt angle fitter using screws to the street light.
    • Uncover the upper lid of the street lamp after loosening the buckle.
    • Make sure all connections to the terminal block or knife switch are secure before connecting any wires to the street light. Tighten the M16 connector on the external power cord.
    • Place the lamp into the pole, close the cover and clips, and turn on the voltage. Make sure the street light is working properly.

    Application of LED Street Lights

LED street lights have a wide range of applications due to their energy efficiency, long lifespan, and ability to provide bright and uniform illumination. Some of the key applications of LED street lights include:

    • Roadway Lighting: LED street lights are commonly used for illuminating roads, streets, highways, and intersections. They enhance visibility for drivers and pedestrians, improving road safety.
    • Parking Lots: LED street lights are often installed in parking lots of various facilities, including shopping centers, airports, and stadiums. They provide well-lit and secure parking areas for vehicles and pedestrians.
    • Public Areas: LED street lights are used in public spaces such as parks, plazas, and recreational areas to ensure safety and visibility during the night. They also contribute to a more inviting and secure environment.
    • Commercial and Industrial Areas: LED street lights are employed in commercial and industrial zones to illuminate large areas efficiently. They reduce energy consumption and operating costs in these areas.
    • Residential Lighting: Some residential neighborhoods use LED street lights for their energy efficiency and long-lasting performance, ensuring well-lit streets and pathways for residents.
    • Architectural Lighting: LED street lights are used to accentuate the architectural features of buildings, bridges, monuments, and landmarks, creating a visually appealing nighttime aesthetic.
    • Tunnel Lighting: LED street lights are suitable for tunnel illumination due to their reliability and the ability to maintain consistent brightness within confined spaces.
    • Pedestrian Walkways: LED street lights are installed along sidewalks, pedestrian pathways, and crosswalks to enhance safety for walkers and joggers during the night.
    • Security Lighting: LED street lights are used for security purposes in areas such as parking garages, building perimeters, and remote facilities to deter unauthorized access and enhance surveillance.
    • Environmental Conservation: LED street lights can be integrated with smart lighting control systems to reduce light pollution by adjusting brightness based on traffic conditions and time of day, promoting energy conservation and a more eco-friendly approach to lighting.
    • Smart City Initiatives: LED street lights are a key component of smart city projects. They can be connected to the Internet of Things (IoT) networks to enable remote monitoring, control, and data collection for optimizing urban lighting and energy usage.
    • Sports Facilities: LED street lights are used to illuminate outdoor sports fields, including football stadiums, tennis courts, and athletic tracks, providing excellent visibility for players and spectators.
